Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple Trivandrum: Vault B Treasures, Darshan & Dress Code

Visiting the world's wealthiest religious shrine: 100-foot granite Gopuram, Anantha Shayana reclining Vishnu, mandatory Dhoti/Mundu dress rules, and royal Travancore history.

The Golden Spiritual Citadel of the Travancore Royal Dynasty

Located in the historic East Fort of Thiruvananthapuram, the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu reclining on the multi-headed cosmic serpent Anantha in the posture of eternal yogic sleep (Anantha Shayana). Internationally catapulted into headlines in 2011 when supreme court-ordered inspections revealed subterranean stone vaults storing gold idols, antique diamonds, rubies, and royal jewels valued at over $22 billion USD, it is recognized as the wealthiest religious institution in human history.

Architectural Splendor & Sacred Features

  • Chera & Dravidian Architectural Fusion: Features a magnificent 100-foot-tall, seven-tiered granite Gopuram constructed in 1568, flanked by the holy Padmatheertham temple pond.
  • Kulasekhara Mandapam: A grand stone corridor supported by 365 carved granite pillars (representing the days of the solar year) adorned with intricate sculptures of deities and musicians.
  • The Three-Door Darshan: The monumental 18-foot-long idol of Lord Padmanabha, crafted from 12,008 sacred Saligramam stones brought from the Gandaki River in Nepal, is so massive that devotees must view the deity through three consecutive carved stone doorways: viewing the face and Shiva Lingam through the first door, the lotus navel of Brahma through the second door, and the lotus feet through the third door.

Strict Darshan Timing & Traditional Dress Codes

The temple enforces ancient orthodox sanctity rules. Only practicing Hindus are permitted beyond the inner temple courtyard. Men must wear traditional unstitched white cotton dhotis (Mundu) and remain bare-chested (no shirts or vests). Women must wear sarees, half-sarees (Dhavani), or traditional Kerala kasavu mundu-neriyathu (salwar suits and western jeans are strictly prohibited). Mundus are available for rent at the outer temple cloakrooms.
